UNICEF’s Bangladesh seemingly successful well-water project in Bangladesh led to widespread arsenic poisoning and the ostracizing of families who lived near poisoned wells. It allows us to identify how a rapist can in fact experience himself as a victim of violence (of the force that he feels requiring him to carry out the act…), even as he is raping a woman. This concept gives us a way to talk about his victimization by cultural norms of masculinity and soldierhood without equating his experience with the injury of direct violence experienced at his hands by the woman.
